A stage performance based on the poetry and prose of José Saramago

Premiere in Catalonia

José Saramago’s prose has been widely published and is known virtually all over the world. By contrast, the same cannot be said of his poetry. Mi voz en tu palabra (‘My voice in your words’) is, therefore, a way of disseminating this unknown facet of his work as widely as possible.

The works of José Saramago, as a symbol and socio-cultural manifestation of a people, crossed the frontiers of the country where they were engendered, Portugal, a long time ago, to become an expressive medium for the concerns and hopes of much of humanity. His literary greatness was recognized with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998, awarded by the Swedish Academy. In addition, he received numerous other awards during his life for his commitment – in all humility – to the values of justice, solidarity and love for humankind. (Juan Blanco)

Esperanza Fernández is one of the finest voices in the world of contemporary flamenco, which has found in her an indisputable star. Thanks to her richly nuanced voice and great elegance, she is able to draw on both more traditional flamenco and other varieties closer to fusion, musical hybridisation and the classical world, with performances of La vida breve, El amor brujo and Siete canciones españolas, and involvement in the revival of the opera Margot by Joaquín Turina (Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, 1999). Together with Enrique Morente, she starred in the show A oscuras, which was one of the biggest hits at the VII Biennial of Flamenco Arts, held at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville in 1994.
