DV8 PHYSICAL THEATRE JOHN

JOHN is a new verbatim dance-theatre work by Lloyd Newson, Artistic Director of DV8 Physical Theatre. Newson interviewed more than 50 men initially asking them frank questions about love and sex. One of those men was John.

What emerged was a story that is both extraordinary and touching. Years of crime, drug use and struggling to survive lead John on a search where his life converges with others in an unexpected place, unknown by most. John authentically depicts real-life stories, where movement and spoken word combine to create an intense, moving and poignant theatrical experience.

This new verbatim dance-theatre work follows on from DV8’s last two productions: To Be Straight With You (Grand Prix de Danse, 2009 – Paris) and Can We Talk About This? (Helpmann Award for Best Dance, 2012 – Sydney;  Production of the Year, Tanz Magazine, 2012 – Germany).

DV8 Physical Theatre is a groundbreaking theatre company that produces original and provocative dance-theatre shows based on socio-political issues, whose goal is to take the audience out of their comfort zone. The company, founded in 1986, has produced 19 dance pieces, all of them highly acclaimed and performed on international tours, as well as four television films that have won several prizes. Led by Lloyd Newson, one of today’s most influential theatre artists, the shows bridge dance, text, theatre and cinema and resist classification.

JOHN contains adult themes, strong language and nudity. Please insert minimum age* (see below)

JOHN is Co-produced by the National Theatre of Great Britain, Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, Théâtre de la Ville and Festival d’Automne Paris, Dansens Hus Stockholm, Dansens Hus Oslo and DV8 Physical Theatre.

*Minimum Age: The work should be advertised, by venues, for adult audiences only i.e. 16-18 years of age, depending on the age of consent for each respective country. Venues should forewarn audiences in all printed publicity, including tickets (as well as on the telephone when booking) that there will be adult themes, strong language and nudity.
