JUAN CARLOS LÉRIDA

Juan Carlos Lérida is a flamenco dancer, choreographer and pedagogue. Since 2002, he has taught flamenco, contemporary dance and composition at the Institut del Teatre, an institution that awarded him a Special Prize in 2007. Together with choreographers such as Joaquín Cortés and Belén Maya he has directed various shows – and also others on his own. He has been the coordinator of the Empirical Flamenco cycle organised by the Mercat de les Flors and is acknowledged as one of the today’s foremost proponents of avant-garde flamenco.

The Mercat de les Flors is accompanying Juan Carlos Lérida on a new project: La liturgia de las horas.

The 2019/20 season of DANCE AND TERRITORY will see the presentation of Doce, the first part of La liturgia de las horas, where Lérida draws on the foundations of what he refers to as empirical flamenco and continues to explore the foundations and poetics of the methodology he has developed through the repetition and deconstruction of the technical bases and expressiveness of flamenco.

La liturgia de las horas is an ample exploration, a process developed over more than two years whose aim is to conceptualize the passage of Jesus Christ from the Last Supper to the Resurrection on the basis of the symbolism of the number twelve. This research was initiated in 2018 with the preparation of a supper at the Tanzhaus Theater in Düsseldorf and will end in 2020 with a twelve-hour performance at the Mercat de les Flors during the 2020-21 season.

Apart from the support of the Mercat, the project counts on the cooperation of other institutions for the presentation of different parts of the piece, with lines of work in diverse formats, such as Máquinas sagradas at the Fira Mediterrània in Manresa in 2018 and the Sismògraf festival in 2020, among others.

Juan Carlos Lérida is a resident artist in Graner during 2019

QUIM BIGAS

Interested in the informative processes that are generated within creative procedures, Quim Bigas works in the fields of choreography, dramaturgy and the information society and his pieces contain aspects of research and provocation. With a degree in dance he went on to complete an artist-in-residency postgraduate at SEAD (Salzburg) and was a guest student at the School of New Developments in Dance – SNDO (Amsterdam). He is currently studying for a master’s in new performance practices in Stockholm. He lives between Copenhagen, Stockholm and Barcelona and he works with artists such as Aitana Cordero, Carme Torrent and El Conde de Torrefiel.

The Mercat de les Flors is accompanying Quim Bigas on a new project: Desplaçament variable.

Based on the Mercat de les Flors archive, the project Desplaçament variable is directed by Quim Bigas. His research is concerned with the analysis of the relationship of the body with space and, for this purpose, he has turned to the Mercat archive, which contains videos of all the artists who have performed at this venue or submitted audio-visual material to be presented there, from the 1980s until the present day. He has classified the videos and selected a set of works that will once again come to life onstage. With both artistic and documentary aspects, Desplaçament variable is a project about the solo works contained in the Mercat de les Flors archive and their respective descriptions. It is directed by Quim Bigas Bassart, with the collaboration of Raquel Tomàs, production by Anna Bohigas, graphics by Roger Adam, and the assistance of Júlia Rubies.
